Breaking Ground

Supporters of Station 20 West pose in front of a pile driver to break ground on the Station 20 West site on Wednesday, July 20.  Wright Construction, which is doing construction management for the project, estimates that the building will be ready for occupancy by July 1, 2012.

Kinsmen Donation

Rick Peddle, President of the Saskatoon Kinsmen Club, presents a cheque for $225,000 to Val Veillard, Vice Chair of the Station 20 West Board of Directors. This donation from the Kinsmen Club puts the Station 20 West "over the top" in terms of the money it needs to begin construction this summer. Station 20 West still needs to raise approximately $500,000 to fully equip the grocery store.

We're starting construction!

The news we've all been waiting for! With the help of generous donations from Affinity Credit Union, Joe Remai, Jim Yuel, the Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon, Wright Construction and many others we now have enough money to begin construction! Lorne Wright, our construction manager, estimates that we'll have shovels in the ground by July 1, 2011!

Over 2000 individual donors, many of whom have given us multiple donations, and more than 150 organizations, including unions, have donated most of the money that we've raised to date. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses (SUN) have provided us with hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants as well as long term, interest free loans.

But without the support of Affinity Credit Union, Joe Remai, Jim Yuel and the Kinsmen Club we could not have proceeded with the construction of a two storey building in 2011. These individuals and organizations have been critical to the success of our capital campaign and we thank them for their generosity and support.

Mr. Joe Remai presents Sheila Pocha, Chair, Station 20 West Board of Directors, with a cheque for $275,000 on May 4, 2011.

Jim and Lisa Yuel present Sheila Pocha Chair of the Station 20 West Board of Directors with a cheque for $100,000.

Spring Festival of Thanks

More than 800 people turned out for a barbeque on the future site of Station 20 West on Thursday, May 12.    Pictured here, third person on the left, is Rev. Cindy Halmorson, Bishop of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saskatchewan, talking to Rev. Don Bolen, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon. Rev. Ron McConnell, President of Saskatchewan Conference of the United Church of Canada, is standing to the right of Rev. Bolen.  Revs. Halmarson and McConnell reported to the audience on the results of the Christian Church Leaders' Advent Campaign on behalf of the Good Food Junction.  The campaign has raised over $155,000 to date.

Royal Gala Dinner

The Second Annual Saskatoon Chefs' Association Royal Gala Dinner, held on Saturday, February 12, was a sold out success! More than 350 people were treated to a wonderful six course gourmet meal prepared by some of Saskatoon's top chefs. The entertainment was provided by Anastasia Winterhalt, Soprano, who was accompanied on the piano by Kerry Agnew.

Len Usiskin, Station 20 West Board member and General Manager of Quint Development Corporation, met with the Saskatoon Chefs' Association Executive on March 1, 2011 to thank the Chefs for choosing to partner with Station 20 West for their Second Annual Royal Gala Dinner on February 12, 2011.

The Roxy Rocks for Station 20 West

On January 16, 2011 over 400 people poured into the Roxy Theatre for a concert to benefit Station 20 West. The owners of the Roxy Theatre generously offered the space for this event. Brenda Baker emceed and the performers included Andrea Menard, Eekwol (Lindsay Knight), and the Bridge City Chorus. People living in the core neighborhoods commented on how important it was to hold the event in Riversdale near where Station 20 West will be located.

Christmas Donation

Members young and older of the St. John Bosco Roman Catholic Parish gather to present a cheque to Station 20 West for $10,887.25. The parish donated its Christmas offering to the Good Food Junction Cooperative Grocery Store.

Churches support Good Food Junction

See the video. On Nov 24, leaders of Saskatoon's Christian Churches signed a letter committing themselves to support the purchase of equipment for the Good Food Junction Co-operative grocery store through "prayers, practical assistance, and where appropriate, fundraising". You too may support this initiative of Saskatoon's Christian churches by designating your Station 20 West donation towards the Good Food Junction grocery store.

Station 20 West Update

Station 20 West is back on track and moving forward. The support of thousands of people across Saskatoon and beyond has made the difference.

SUN support for Station 20 West

Randa Schikosky, President of SUN Local 101, St. Paul's Hospital, presents a cheque for $10,000 to Station 20 West Project Coordinator Christine Smillie.

With a renewed energy and commitment to our goal of building an integrated service centre that includes the Good Food Junction, a locally owned grocery cooperative, we will break ground in 2011.

Station 20 West remains the engine for economic renewal of Saskatoon’s Core neighborhoods—balancing financial sustainability with enhanced social and environmental outcomes.

The Building and Grounds

Plans now call for a 29,000 square foot, two storey building with a finished cost of $6 million. The grounds will include welcoming green spaces, an open air stage and places for people to gather and connect with each other as they visit the library, buy groceries or participate in one of the many programs and services that will be delivered at Station 20 West.

The Affordable Housing Development with 55 units, immediately north of the Station 20 West site is complete with occupancy currently taking place. Contact the Saskatoon Housing Authority for more information at 668-2700. The new Branch of the Saskatoon Library is on the main floor of the housing development.

Around the Sound Local Food Market
Owen Sound, Ontario
February 15, 2010

I have a local food market, selling the products of 82 cooks, farmers, gardeners, bakers, processors and crafts people from our area in Owen Sound. We’ve recently expanded so that we can be the first neighbourhood grocery store in thirty years. We’ve chosen a location that will allow us to run a community kitchen for the local residents and cooking classes and a small scale processing kitchen.

I also ran the Good Food Box for 14 years. So when I heard about your project from a young woman who came from Alberta via Saskatchewan, I wanted to send a small token and wish you the very best in building your dream.

Respectfully,
Anne Finlay-Stewart

Come on Board as we head into the station—Station 20 West. Make a donation and be part of shaping Saskatoon’s future.

Next…… Why build a community enterprise centre?

Station 20 West, Saskatoon's innovative community enterprise centre, is going ahead!

Station 20 West will give the residents of Saskatoon's core neighborhoods a hand up rather than a hand out. I support that kind of development.
